Deloitte Mental Health and Employers Report 2022
At a high level, the nervous system is comprised of the central nervous system and the autonomic nervous system and the latter is responsible for how we respond to stress.
It determines whether we are in 'rest and digest' state or 'fight or flight'. It informs the brain whether we are in danger and whether to create symptoms such as a fast heart rate, clammy palms or slow and deep restful breathing.
If we are in fight or flight state for too long, our autonomic nervous system can create chronic symptoms associated with burnout such as fatigue, pain, headaches, insomnia, lack of motivation and reduced productivity.
Chronic illnesses are also associated with an over-stressed nervous system and these include Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Long Covid and Chronic Anxiety, it's also linked to ADHD. Millions of people are affected in the UK alone. So the issue is real, and it's big.
